POETRY
By Blanka Ježková
Proofreading: Pearl Harris
Paní Pearl Harris dělala korekturu mému anglickému překladu knihy Putování hvězdy www.putovanihvezdy.cz s názvem Travels of a Star www.travelsofastar.com. Je to kniha dětské poezie, takže to byla práce docela náročná. Přeložit příběh ve verších tak, aby byl zachován děj, aby byl gramaticky správně a ještě se rýmoval, není úplně snadné. A nám se to, myslím, společně podařilo velmi dobře. Určitě paní Pearl všem doporučuji.

Why I do not use CAT tools:
I can proudly state that I am an old-fashioned linguistic craftswoman, who works with real words, and real dictionaries, not with words that the computer dictates to me! It is a fact that I manually have to check a long text, a book for example, to see that I have unified all the words/ expressions – but this requires the “human touch” – which a CAT can not beat! It obviously takes me much longer, but ultimately, I present the client with a much better result. No CAT tool can ever equal a real in-depth knowledge of the language by a native speaker. I totally reject the use of CAT tools!
My Bible is the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, which has 183 500 words in both British and American English, in current usage. I naturally also consult online dictionaries, websites and the appropriate reference books for technical and specialised terminology and neologisms.
When I receive a text, no matter what the subject matter – from a PhD thesis to an article for a leisure magazine – first of all, I need to know whether the client requires American or British English. These are two very different languages! If it is for publication or use in the EU, then British English is the preferred language. I am equally able to proofread both types of English. Many people do not realise the numerous differences in vocabulary, grammar and spelling between these 2 languages!
“England and America are two countries
separated by THE SAME language”
George Bernard Shaw – (1856-1950)
I go through the text carefully, marking in track changes and correcting all the obvious grammatical, vocabulary and word order mistakes. Thereafter, I read it for a 2nd time, often aloud, to get the feel of the language, as it would sound / read to a native speaker. This is the time for the 2nd revision and polishing, substituting even better vocabulary and wording where appropriate.
If I am totally satisfied, this is the final version I send to my client. More often than not, I read the whole text for a 3rd time, making additional changes where necessary to ensure it is the ultimate polished version and the very best text I can produce.
This philosophy applies to all texts I proofread, from half a page to 300 pages in length, on topics ranging from fashion to nuclear science. All my clients are treated with equal consideration and respect.
